Can I use an automotive block to replace a cracked block in my boat?
I have a cracked 305 block in my boat and I am wondering if I can use an automotive 305 or 350 block as a replacement. All of the engine components are essentially brand new so I’m trying to figure out if there’s a way to simply swap components from one block to another. I realize the specifics are more detailed than this, but in practice I’m wondering if its possible without having to spend a ton of money.
Also, based on responses, is there anything that can be done to an automotive block to avoid excessive corrosion? And what kind of time frame are we talking with a reduced lifespan for the block? I only put about 100 hours on the engine per year.
Yes you certainly can. In fact, your marine engine block and auto engine block all come form the exact same place. All the differences (risers, wiring, backfire resistor, etc,) start from the block.
